Most Landscape Designers will place a patio against the home as in the past
that has always been the place of choice for easy access to windows and doors.
That type of placement may be convenient for your easy access, but is just as

Now on to the choice of plantings !.
Under each of the two windows of the home in the picture we placed a
Pyracantha more commonly called (Firethorn) a evergreen know for it's
small white flowers in the spring and bright orange or deep red berry's
in the late summer and fall that last well into the winter.
This plant has another attribute and that's were the security part comes
in.
It produces and maintains long sharp thorns all year long that even the
most determined would be home invader will want no part of.
We flanked the garden bed planter with rose's ,another beautiful but
effective deterrent.
We took your security even further.
Before anyone can get past the plantings mentioned above we added a
little more color and beauty by placing Barberis (Barberry) in selective
locations as a first line of defence, Barberry are know for there needle
sharp thorns and landscape enhancing crimson color.
We didn't stop there.
Notice the low natural stone garden retainer .
A would be home invader will have to step up into it to get close to any
access point they have in mind and heres were the first surprise comes
into play.
Within the planter , instead of using mulch or just leaving a top soil top
dressing we added a natural decorative stone ground cover with a
landscape fabric base material.
The landscape fabric will help with weed control and prevent the stone
from infiltrating into the sub soil.
The stone is the security fetcher .
Anyone stepping on it will generate a noisy crunching sound.
